Karate
Jo’Li Martial Arts is a progressive modern style with a comprehensive syllabus. Shotokan Karate is the style practiced. However, at higher levels the syllabus combines the best points from some of the Chinese and Japanese martial arts. Consider the apparent and very contradictory ‘softness’ of the Chinese styles for their relaxation and flow of energy with the dynamics of some of the ‘harder’ Japanese styles and you will appreciate the path of Jo’Li Martial Arts. The Chinese influence is mainly from the Northern Shaolin Chang Chuen style via the KIXX Martial Arts group Maidstone.

Kickboxing (ladies only)
A fun class promoting a high level of cardio exercise combined with the correct striking of pads, shields and bags. Gloves and wrist strapping may be required for this class. The style and combination of techniques will have an origin in the Jo’Li Martial Arts Karate system but the emphasis will be clearly fitness based. This class does not include sparring as the focus of the class is fun and fitness.

Circuit Training
This is mainly a toning and strength conditioning exercise class. The typical class format is to warm up, followed by some vigorous toning and conditioning exercises. All of the classes in the range cater for the individuals’ level of fitness and improvement. All instructors will pay particular attention to your correct posture, a wide variety of techniques, relaxation and fun. At all times you will be reminded to consider your own body and its signals in order to avoid damage and injury. If you have a current injury the instructor must be notified at the beginning if each class. Compounding an injury will ultimately prevent training and as such is counter productive.

Mixed Martial Arts (+14 yrs)
Sparring / fighting competition event or just training. Either at Full Contact or Semi-Contact. Each association / competition will have its own variation of the rules, therefore we train for all eventualities. Classes are open to both male and female students but Full Contact is restricted to over 16’s. Minimum equipment required for these classes will be, gum shield, groin guard, boxing gloves, hand wraps (for Full Contact only). Extra equipment may include, shin pads, chest guard and head guard. Target areas differ for the two events, as does the acceptable level of contact. It is not necessary to write all here as the rules my change per competition. Generally speaking the ‘no-go’ areas are the same i.e., groin, back of head, back.

Weapons
Please note that the weapons syllabus taught at the gym is very strict with regard to Health & Safety. To that end any individual who behaves irresponsibly will be asked politely not to attend these classes.
The weapons taught at Jo’Li range from the traditional to the modern competition. Weapons sets are taught to those that have a good understanding, appreciation for the weapons in question. The weapons set is something akin to a prearranged stunt fight. The set is performed with a vigour and reality that belies the amount of practice required. some students may, if they wish, be entered for competition or demonstration in the weapons and set events. It is possible to compete nationally and internationally if so desired, subject to commitment and interest. Some of the weapons taught include: Long Stick, Short Stick, Nunchuku, Kama, Sai, Bokken (practice Katana), Kubotan.
